Introduction

"Moreover, the practice of weapon-craft alleviates aches, sorrows, and ailments, fostering physical strength and sharpening intellectual faculties. It cultivates astute judgment, dispels melancholy, irritable moods, and negative thoughts, maintains physical fitness, and promotes longevity. To those who have attained mastery, it serves as a dependable, heartening companion during solitary moments, with only their weapon as company. This expertise eradicates fear; even amidst warfare and perilous circumstances, it fosters courage, resilience, and valor" (Paradoxes of Defense by George Silver).

Step into the past, where chivalry and combat were intertwined in a dance of skill and strategy. Historical fencing, also known as historical European martial arts (HEMA), is a captivating journey that takes enthusiasts back to the days of knights and swordplay. This beginner's guide will uncover the essence of historical fencing, exploring its history, techniques, and the vibrant community that keeps its legacy alive.

A Glimpse into History

Historical fencing revives the martial traditions of Europe, ranging from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and beyond. It encompasses a diverse array of weapons, including swords, rapiers, daggers, polearms, and more. These traditions were often documented in treatises and manuals written by fencing masters of the time. These manuscripts provide invaluable insights into the techniques, tactics, and philosophy behind historical combat. Manny enthusiastic men and women have spent years of their lives interpreting and preserving the legacy of the ancient fencing masters. This momentous effort by so many around the world has produced a global phenomenon of modern swordplay which is now practiced by thousands of enthusiasts.

Within the halls of HEMA clubs, the ancient clash of steel and the whispers of bygone warriors still resonate, reminding us that the art of historical fencing is not just a pastime, but a living testament to the enduring spirit of valor and mastery.

Mastering the Basics

For beginners, historical fencing begins with understanding the basic principles of footwork, posture, and weapon handling. Proper stance, balance, and grip form the foundation for effective strikes, parries, and guards. The intricate interplay between offense and defense requires a deep understanding of timing, distance, and angles. Learning the nuanced techniques and mechanics of various weapons is a gradual process that demands patience and practice.

The 16th century English swordsman delineated the necessary elements for understanding swordplay by summarizing as follows:

"First judgement, lying's, distance, direction, pace, space, place, time, indirection, motion, action, general and continual motion, progression, regression, traversing, and treading of ground, blows, thrusts, falses, doubles, slips, wards, breaking of thrusts, closings, grips, & wrestling, guardant fight, open fight, variable fight, and close fight, and four governors" (Paradoxes of Defense, chap. XVI).

Weapons and Styles

Historical fencing boasts an impressive range of weapons and styles, each with its own unique characteristics. Longsword fencing, characterized by its two-handed grip, offers a diverse set of techniques for both cutting and thrusting. Rapier fencing emphasizes elegance and precision, with a focus on thrusting techniques. Meanwhile, dagger combat involves quick and close-quarters engagements, showcasing the art of disarming and controlling opponents.

There is also a diversity of modern traditions that have grown from the more ancient traditions of the past. Our club places an emphasis on English martial arts as well as other arts within the modern United Kingdom. Other clubs focus on the martial traditions of the Germanic regions, or the Italian fencing traditions, and some clubs may focus on Spanish fencing. Whatever a club's particular emphasis there is always an enthusiasm and passion for the art of swordsmanship.

Safety First

Safety is paramount in historical fencing, and modern practitioners use protective gear to prevent injuries during training and sparring. Fencing masks, gloves, padded jackets, and specialized armor allow enthusiasts to engage in controlled combat scenarios without compromising their well-being.

Our club, as well as others, prioritizes safety. Safety is first and fun is the next runner-up. We are always mindful that if we aren’t safe then we aren’t having fun.

The Community and Culture

One of the most remarkable aspects of historical fencing is the vibrant and welcoming community that surrounds it. Enthusiasts, scholars, and practitioners come together to share knowledge, conduct workshops, and participate in tournaments. These events provide an opportunity to test skills, learn from others, and experience the camaraderie that emerges from a shared passion for history and martial arts.

Our club hosts an annual tournament in the Spring and an inter-club gathering in the Fall. There are also several regional tournaments hosted by clubs all around the Midwest and beyond. A practitioner's level of commitment is entirely dependent upon their personal interests. Some like the tournament scene, some love the history, others prefer the socialization, and then there could be an interest in all these things or perhaps something entirely different.

Preserving a Legacy

Historical fencing is not merely a physical endeavor; it's an art that preserves and honors the heritage of a bygone era. By studying the treatises left behind by fencing masters, practitioners bridge the gap between past and present, unraveling the secrets of combat techniques and gaining insight into the mindset of warriors long gone.
